Private stay registration

If you stay in a private home, Airbnb, or a friend’s place, register with local public security within 24 hours. That is Law Article 39. Fine up to RMB 2,000 (Article 76).

Hotels do this for you. Private stays do not. Change of address means register again.

An online registration pilot started 20 March 2026 in Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing, and Sichuan. Visa-free travellers are not exempt.
